How to playback movies on a Mac with a JVC Everio HDD Cam

There are a number of ways of playing back movies on a Mac using a JVC Everio Cam. Many disussion boards talk about MPEG Streamclip and QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback. The latter is not available for QuickTime Pro and retails at an extra 10.00 GBP. MPEG Streamclip and MPEG-2 playback converts files to '.DV'. You can then playback DV files in, for example, iMovie.

Convert using ffmpegX

Another way is to use ffmpegX. You need to go through the hassle of finding the ffmpegX components but once that is done encoding .mod files is easy. Simply drag and drop and save to, for example, desktop and then playback in QuickTime or iMovie

Connect the Cam via the USB cable to the Apple Mac. Turn the Cam on. A number of options will be displayed on the screen. One of these is Connect to Device. Select this. The device will connect to the computer. Click on the external drive box and this will display the contents. Click on 'SD_VIDEO', and then 'PRG001'. Drag and drop .MOD files only, disregard the other files.

Convert using VLC

Download VLC. Rename .MOD file to .m2v. Drag and drop to VLC. Playback on VLC doesn't seem to be as sharp as Quicktime.

Convert using DropDV

Probably the most simplest method. With DropDV you drag and drop .MOD files and it automatically converts it into a .dv file in a separate project folder on the desktop together with a iMovie Project File.

Convert using Google Video
